How to Actually Measure Social Media ROI

"What's the ROI of social?" is the question that makes most marketers reach for a slide full of impressions. But reach and likes aren't returns, and everyone in the room knows it. Here's how to measure social in a way that actually holds up.

Decide what a result looks like first

You can't measure ROI without agreeing on the "R." For most businesses it's one of three things: leads, sales, or booked calls. Pick the one that maps to revenue and make every channel accountable to it.

Track the whole path, not just the last click

Social rarely gets the last click, it plants the seed that a search or an email later closes. Judge it only on last-click attribution and you'll defund the thing feeding your whole funnel.

Social is often the reason someone searched your name in the first place. Measure its influence, not just its final touch.

The metrics that matter

  • Cost per result, what you spent to produce a lead, sale, or booking.
  • Assisted conversions, deals social touched on the way to closing.
  • Audience growth of the right people, followers who fit your buyer, not vanity numbers.
  • Save and share rate, the strongest signal that content actually landed.

Close the loop

Add tracked links, use a consistent UTM structure, and connect your social data to your CRM. Once you can see a follower become a customer, the ROI conversation stops being a debate.

Measured properly, social stops being the channel you can't justify and becomes the one you can't cut. The difference is entirely in how you count.
